Consequently, Mozart learned at a young age that to become a sough after musician meant playing to the dignitary’s hand. As a result, Mozart quickly found favor in Vienna and across Europe, which led to many successful Opera Buffas. He was the seventh of seven children. Wolfgang and his sister Maria (the fourth of seven children) were the only children that survived. Mozart’s father, Leopold was a musician who oversaw Mozart and his sister’s education. He took Wolfgang and Maria on his many traveling tours and introduced them to this wide circle of friends and acquaintances, some of which were Salzburg nobility and the archbishop. Mozart is known for being a musical prodigy, learning to play the piano at age four and composing his first piece at five in 1761. In 1761 Leopold took his son on tour and had his first public performance at Salzburg University. He went on to play for many noted figures in Munich and Vienna in 1762. The tour in Vienna was a great success and when the family returned to Salzburg in 1763 Leopold was promoted to deputy Kapellmeister.
